* * *

But on Friday, I’m not so lucky, and Becca finally catches up with me midmorning.

“Don’t think I haven’t noticed you avoiding me,” she says, sliding into the chair next to me in the breakroom, coffee in hand.

“Just been busy,” I lie. “And my break’s up, so I should get back to it.” I start to rise, but Becca shakes her head.

“Oh, Sasha, you’re a horrible liar. I saw you come in here two minutes ago. Sit that adorable ass back down.”

I slink back into my chair with a sigh. “I’m sorry, you’re right, I’ve been avoiding you.”

“Well, duh,” Becca says, rolling her eyes. “What I want to know is why. Did I say something to piss you off?”

“No,” I protest. “I just … you know sometimes I kind of close ranks. This is one of those times.”

Becca sighs, spinning her mug in circles. Finally, she looks up at me, with a wounded air about her. “You know you can talk to me about anything, right? Even if I do get a little cray-cray from time to time, I’ve got your back.”

I reach over and squeeze her hand reassuringly. “I know. And when I’m ready to talk, you’ll be the first person to know. I promise.” But part of me wonders how much of this is her still pushing to know if this has anything to do with Cal. On the bright side, that means we’ve done a passable job of acting normally at work. It could also mean Becca wants to be privy to the gossip first, being as nosy as she is. But I’ll choose to give her the benefit of the doubt. She has a big heart, and I know she’s mostly looking out for me.

“Good. Now, I know you’ll probably say no, but we’re doing happy hour tonight. You’re welcome to join. Or not. If this has anything to do with Dr. Thompson, he won’t be there, I already asked him.”

I press my lips together. No, he wouldn’t be going, because he’s already agreed to make me dinner at his place.

“Thanks, but I need to catch up on studying. Finals are week after next.” That’s not a lie. And I will be studying most of the weekend. Well, tomorrow at least, since Cal will be working anyway.

“Suit yourself,” she says with a shrug, looking defeated. It’s exactly how she looked yesterday, so it occurs to me that it probably has less to do with me and more to do with the bad boy orderly who apparently has a girlfriend. She must’ve been more into him than I realized. Like more into him than anyone she has been in a long time, because I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen her so bummed out by something. It’s definitely dulled her usual sparkle.

“Hey,” I say, catching her eye. “How about we do lunch tomorrow instead? I can take a break.”

She sighs. “That’s sweet, but I switched shifts with Harper. Thanks, though.”

“Okay. Well, I may be doing my thing, but you know I’m always here for you too, right?”

That gets a wan smile at least.
